Keynote Address: Leadership for the Profession – and Beyond the Profession
Mickey Jacob, Managing Principal, Urban Studio Architects, Tampa, Florida, 2010 – 2011 AIA Vice President – Advocacy, 2012 AIA President-Elect, 2013 AIA President View Profile As the design and construction industry starts to climb out of the economic downturn it has become more important than ever for architects to become leaders in the profession and our communities. Through strong leadership, Architects can lay the strategic groundwork to stimulate long term prosperity and become the respected voice advocating for the importance of design in shaping livable communities and elevating the public visibility of the profession. This discussion will center on what the AIA is implementing to support this strategy and what you can do as an Architect to become involved.

Seminar 1: Renovating Historic Buildings (saving energy and not screwing things up while not irritating the Parks Service)
Dr. Joseph Lstiburek, B.A.Sc., M.Eng., Ph.D., P.Eng View Profile Fixing old buildings is pretty straightforward. Keep them from falling down, blowing away or burning. Keep the rainwater and ground water out of them. Then if you are so inclined because you have bought into the green cult or carbon religion you can make them airtight and insulate them making sure they can dry when (not if) they get wet. So how come the historic folks get hysterical? How hard can this be? Although the physics are easy to understand, the implications are not. Saving energy (a good thing) makes buildings wetter longer (a bad thing). This session is all about how to keep the good while avoiding the bad.

Wagdy Anis View ProfileBuilding Enclosure Design must evolve in order to accommodate whole building energy efficiency goals of net zero. This seminar will explore available technologies to include the highest energy efficiency, explain where the bottlenecks are, and explore dynamic facade technologies that are an important consideration in building design. The seminar will also explore regional energy efficiency impacts of enclosure systems.

Seminar 3: Generation NEXT: Leveraging a 21st Century Talent Brand
Andrew Caruso, Assoc. AIA, Leed AP, CDT
View ProfileAmid shifting markets and new paradigms of practice, one truth remains clear: the next generation of designers is not only your organization’s most valuable asset, but also its compass for growth. Thus, human capital investments in today’s knowledge economy require deeper thinking, innovative strategy and authentic commitment.
What is your company’s early-career talent brand? Is it clear, relevant and compelling for today’s rising stars? In our time together, we’ll examine key trends in emerging populations of the design industry and explore scalable strategies to enhance talent outreach, acquisition, professional development, licensure and the retention of your future leaders.

Seminar 4: Nanotechnology in Architecture:
New Risks and Rewards
George Elvin, Founder, Gone Studio View Profile Nanotechnology, the design of materials at the molecular scale, is changing the face of architecture. Already, luminous nanofilms are turning entire walls and ceilings into sources of light, nanoparticle coatings are making buildings self-cleaning and VOC-eating, and nanofilm solar panels are turning entire buildings into solar collectors. Join George Elvin, PhD, LEED AP, for a glimpse of some of the hundreds of building products
currently using nanotechnology and a look ahead at next generation nanotechnologies. Together you'll explore the technology behind the nano- revolution, what it means for the future of building, and what risks it may bring.
